Can we just say?  Bill Clinton. is. Bad. Ass.

Last Thursday, we went to the Purple Otter for Team Trivia.  (Some of our teammates just love Team Trivia, but this blogger does not agree.  You can make your own decision on that.)

Purple Otter is a bar that celebrates both the University of Wisconsin and otters, meaning we were predisposed to loving it, as we are Big Ten alumni and huge fans of otters holding hands.  The Thursday specials are $3 Vodka Lemonades, $4 bombs, and $2.50 cheese quesadillas.  We were all about taking advantage of food specials, but if you are feeling daring you can try the Philly Drops (the love child of crab rangoon and a philly cheesesteak) or the suckling pig (a true steal at $5.75)!

The bartender, Dave, is super nice.  He also appears to take care of the entire bar single-handedly, so tip him well!  He loves female country music singers–be prepared to hear your favorite Carrie Underwood and Shania Twain hits before trivia starts at 8.

Trivia is standard Team Trivia.  One twist is that if no group gets an answer right, the MC just nixes the question and starts over again.  The MC also alerted us to the Team Trivia answer of the day, where a random answer from every night’s trivia is posted on the website.  Who knew?

Team Limbic System, the eventual second place winners, were pretty cool except when unable to hide their disdain at some of our answers (just because we can’t name 5 Todd Rundgren hits doesn’t necessarily mean that he wasn’t extremely prolific before our time…although, turns out, it does).  Limbic system won $15 off next week’s tab; the winners got $20 off next week.

Overall, trivia at Purple Otter is so-so.  There’s nothing really to distinguish it from any other Team Trivia night.  We probably won’t be back.  But, if you live in the area, it could be a fun way to spend a Thursday night and not a lot of money.

Are you brave enough to try the Philly Drops?  Leave a comment and let us know!

This week we hit the Old Town/Gold Coast hang out Butch McGuires for trivia, bringing along an old high school friend as a guest (thanks for playing, buddy!).

If you are a single trivia player, this may be the place for you.  As the website states “through cocktails and conversation, it is believed that over 5,000 marriages have resulted from encounters at Butch’s.”  Indeed, a couple of mid-aged gents with cocktails were spotted ogling one of our teammembers.

While we may not have had a love encounter, we did encounter a solid trivia night.   Specials are 2 for 1 appetizers, $6.95 grilled cheese and tomato soup (nobody tried this), $8 domestic pitchers, $5 Jager bombs, and $4 beer-of-the-month (Blue Moon for June).  The appetizers are generally pretty good, but be warned: the nacho portions are pretty small compared to other bars.   Notably small enough, in fact, to inspire a team name.

Trivia was a team trivia format, which we have explained in prior posts.  As a nice variation, teams were welcome to make requests for the songs played while grading between questions.  It seems that anything goes, music-wise, so don’t be shy.  Request what you want!   Our requests for both The Beach Boys and Def Lepard were honored, and our request for “Mr. Roboto” (an homage to our night at Cinners) was attempted, but thwarted by an unexpected and weird remix.

The trivia host does a nice job keeping it fun and moving it along.  Trivia started at 8:10 and was over just after 10.  Also, she handled it well when one of the answers was blurted out, with a substitute question at the ready.  Prizes are a $25 gift card for first place, shots for second place, and beers for third.  We finished in a mildly disappointing fifth place after, once again, taking a big gamble on the final question.  When will we learn, Team Trivia?

Overall, domo arigato to Butch McGuires for a good time.  Nice specials, fun host, and a great atmosphere.  Interestingly, once trivia ended, the guy/girl ratio in the bar stood at about 15/1 making the “over 5000 marriages” claim even more suspect.  If you are into trivia, grilled cheese, and jager bombs, and are looking to spend about $12, there is arguably no other place to go.  If you are into nachos, skip it.

We’ve said it before, and we’ve said it again, we’re not huge fans of the Team Trivia format.  That being said, we’d go back to Riverview Tavern

Trivia starts at 7:30pm and you should probably get there by 7 if you want to get a table.  There’s plenty of parking on Damen or Roscoe if you get there early enough.

The specials are pretty standard: $3 Bud Light drafts or $18 buckets of Bud or Bud Light, and maybe Mich Ultra(?), bottles, and in April, $3 Shock Top.  Let it be said, as far as logos go, Shock Top’s is formidable:

No, you are not imagining things…it is in fact an orange slice wearing sunglasses and a wheat mohawk.  And wheat eyebrows.  Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Anyway, the trivia is pretty standard to Team Trivia…6 rounds, 3 questions each, you wager on points, one song per question, final 15-point question, etc.  What really makes Riverview’s trivia stand out is the DJ.  He’s a little bit DJ Mike (minus maybe 15 years) and a little bit Ryan Seacrest (master of suspense!).

No Here Comes Treble trivia outing is complete without something shady to complain about (ahem, Brownstone Trivia Tournament).  At Riverview, in one round, the team that scores 100% wins a bucket of beer.  In case of a tie, the eligible teams each send a representative to the DJ to answer a tie-breaker question.  Here’s where it gets shady.  In our tie-breaker, the first person to turn in his answer got it wrong.  Then, instead of taking answers in the order that the remaining team reps finished writing, the DJ took the answers counter-clockwise, so the first person to his right who knew the answer won the prize.  WTF?

Other than that, not too bad.  And because it started early, we were out of there by 9:45pm, so we had the rest of the night to bask in the glory of our win.  No, we didn’t win first place (2 tickets to see Kevin Rudolf at House of Blues and a zip-up jacket).  Talk about destroying team unity trying to decide who got those prizes.  We legitimately won our second tie-breaker of the evening to win 3rd place: 2 tickets to see Dr. Dog at the Double Door, a free pizza at Robie Pizza Company, and assorted March Madness beads and bottle openers.

Who needs a zip-up jacket when you got these babies?

Jealous?
