As much as we gush about Crew, we don’t end up playing trivia there as much as we’d like. So we hightailed it to Uptown on Monday to spend some Q.T. with our favorite woman of the cloth, Sister Mary Monistat. As usual, she did not disappoint.
Monday night was not totally problem-free, as they ran out of both the Monday night beer special ($3.75 Stella Artois, which was eventually replaced by $2.75 Bud Light–we appreciated the price cut) and their veggie relish. However, I’ll forgive them, because Good Lord, Sister Mary runs a glorious trivia night. Believe us, we’ve been to quite a few in this town and Crew is a gem. The holy sister keeps us laughing all evening. She also keeps us thinking–the questions are pretty difficult, but usually, an educated guess or a recalled answer from a previous trivia night can have good results. (Hint: learn everything you can about Timothy Leary.)
And the music round! After the Great Beatles Fiasco of 2009, we were truly awed by how well the Crew music round is run. PubStumpers comes up with all the questions throughout the night, but it’s in the music round that they really shine. (1) Their sound bites are the perfect length: not too short that you can figure it out if you know the song, but not too long that everyone knows it by the time it is over. (2) Sister Mary doesn’t ever include the song title in part she plays, not even to “trick us.” (3) The clips provided by PubStumpers aren’t necessarily the beginning of the song, which can make things a bit more challenging. (4) The music clips spans all years and all music genres, so you are never SOL if you are not familiar with the first song. (5) There are two music rounds every week for double the fun! Sister Mary and PubStumpers really put a lot of thought and effort into their trivia nights and we love them for it.
Finally, let’s say a prayer for Miller Lite, who has designed a delightfully confusing new coaster for Chicago’s North side neighborhoods: Boystown, Lakeview, Andersonville, and…Dynamic?
Can I get an Amen?
