Any time a high-profile coach like Charlie Weis or Dick Jauron gets fired, we always think of Mike Ditka. In honor of Da Coach, let’s take a look back at other fired Chicago coaches!
- Ditka (Bears, Fired in 1992): Iron Mike is one of only two people (with Tom Flores) to win Super Bowls as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. He’s also the only player involved in the Bears’ last two championships–as a player in 1963 and as Da Coach in 1985.
- Dave Wannstedt (Bears, Fired in 1998): Wannstedt was drafted by the Packers in 1974, but spent his only season in the NFL on the reserve list with a neck injury. On the day he was fired (December 28, 1998), five NFL coaches (1/6 of the league) lost their jobs.
- Jim Riggleman (Cubs, Fired in 1999): Riggleman was the Cubs coach during their historic 1998 season, when Sammy Sosa chased Roger Maris’ home run record.
- Don Baylor (Cubs, Fired in 2002): Baylor ranks 4th all-time in getting hit by pitches, a total of 267 times. He twice beat team records for most Hit By Pitches in a season (24 in 1985 for the Yankees and 35 in 1986 for the Red Sox). (more…)
