This week, our full team reunited for the first time in over a month, and visited The Bungalow Lounge for their weekly music trivia.  It was certainly one of the most unique trivia nights we have been to.  Maybe it’s because I have been trivia-deprived for so long, but I had a really good time, and our enthusiastic MCs did a great job with the questions.

The place is aptly named…it had a lounge-like feel to it (dim lights, candles, leather seats), and it was a bungalow.  Really there’s no other name by which this institution should go by.  Maybe “Kitchenless Menuless Lounge” would also have been appropriate, as they were redoing their menus, and we ended up ordering pizza and having it delivered to our table.  We much would have preferred the tamale-man from Bucktown Pub, but it’s a tough economy.

Pizza!

Our server was very pleasant, and offered us a variety of menus that would deliver.  The dim lights were offset by a small, battery operated, portable lamp.  We weren’t big fans of the lamp due to it’s shoddy construction, and used the light from our candle instead.

The drink specials included $4 Heinekens, $4 cherry bombs, and $7 Stoli martinis.  They had a variety of beers on tap, but nothing special.  Trivia started a little late (closer to 8:40).  The question format was really fun.  There was a photo round (album covers and artists), name that tune, name those lyrics, and lastly (and most interestingly) a music video round.  The music video was played on the bar TVs, and the MCs asked 10 questions about the video.

The questions were a good mix, and our MCs were very enthusiastic.  I think one of them was a cougar (not that there’s anything wrong with that).  The “Name that tune” questions were interspersed with little clues that could help you out, but you had to be constantly paying attention.  Obviously, both MCs knew their music really well, as they always had random facts to contribute.  The music was well spread across the decades.  It was mostly rock/pop/alternative/indie, and there was very little country or hip hop (which is OK with us).  The “Name that lyrics” round was surprisingly hard, but where the night really stood out was the “Video Round.”

They played an awesome video by Cobra Starship called “Good Girls Go Bad.”  The video and the song were really as awesome as you are imagining them to be right now.  The round was akin to a memory game that I played in a Will Shortz book when I was as kid.  Back in my nerdy 8-year old days, I would look at a picture of a scene of lots of stuff happening.  After studying the page for a few minutes, I would turn the page over and answer the questions.  It would be obscure things like “What was the license plate of the car on the right?”  This video round was similar.  We watched and listened to the video, and then we were asked 10 obscure questions about them (Questions like “What did the sign in the store say?”)

Scoring was quick, and done by trade-and-grade.  We thought we did pretty good until we started grading another team, and then realized that we actually didn’t do well at all.  We ended up in 6th place out of 9 teams (ouch!).  There are prizes for the top 2 teams – a bottle of cherry vodka (WTF?) and a $50 gift card for the lounge.  The night ended LATE (close to 11 pm), which wasn’t ideal for exhausted members of the team.

All in all, The Bungalow Lounge is one of the better Thursday night trivia spots in Chicago, especially for music.  As long as you’re OK eating food beforehand and getting out after 11 pm, watching the video by Cobra Starship was enough to make this a great night for me.

+ Great variety of music

+ I was introduced to the greatness that is Cobra Starship

This week we went to our first ever Sunday-evening trivia outing at Logan Bar and Grill.  Logan just opened up this past year, and is run by the same folks who own Northside in Bucktown.  As an additional plus for me, personally, I was able to walk there, and even had time to run home and get sweaters for the team on a chilly night.  Very convenient.

The specials of the night were $4 Fat Tire and $4 Shiner Bock.  Which isn’t that special, since the price of the Fat Tire and Shiner Bock as stated on the menu was also $4.  That’s like going to McDonald’s and having a $1 sale on everything on the dollar menu.  The food is standard bar and grill fare….decent, but we’ve had better.

The trivia is similar to what we encountered at Cans.  It was hosted by Whaddayaknow?  Free Team Trivia, which basically consists of  rounds where you can wager more based on how confident you are about your answer.  You are allowed one full song to answer each question, determine your wager, and drop off the answer in a receptacle at the bar.  There were 2 first-half rounds, 6 questions each, and we could wager between 1-6 points.  The 2nd half rounds were also 6 questions each, and we could wager between 2-12 points.  Halves were broken up by a picture round and an identification round (both handouts).  There are 2 final questions, which can be worth up to 10 points, but you are penalized for missing them.

We played as the Fringe Trimmers.  The trivia itself was all general trivia, and for the most part, was fun and fair.  The MC had a tendency to ramble incoherently at times (actually at all times), which sometimes made listening to the actual questions difficult.  It was kind of like a cross between going to a trivia night and an auction.  For example, a question might be “What is the capital of Georgia?”  He would ask “Hey guys, there’s a state, it’s here in the United States.  The state is Georgia.  Georgia.  Georgia is the state.  It has a capital.  There is a capital of Georgia.  I want to know the capital of the state.  The state is Georgia, it’s here in the United States, and I need to know the capital.”  It reminded me of The Whether Man from the Phantom Tollbooth.  Know what I’m talking about?  No?

We’re not sure where we ended up for the night in the standings, since we missed the last 2 final questions.  To be honest, I’m not sure I would trust the guy who was tallying our scores (despite his Asian heritage).  We do know that prizes were awarded for the top 4 teams, but are unsure of what those prizes might be.

However, on an extremely positive note, one of the questions was:

“On the show The Office, what is the name of Andy Bernard’s a cappella group from Cornell?”

HOLY SHIT!  We were psyched.  It was awesome.  It made the whole night so much better.

It was a fun night, and so far, the only place that serves up trivia on Sunday night, so that alone makes it worthy of a shout-out.

+ Good question variation

+Exclusive Sunday night option

– Specials aren’t that special

– Manic MC

After making a weekly commitment to the Brownstone Monday Night Trivia Tournament, what better way to spice things up than go back to the same place the next day for more trivia.   Tuesday night trivia at Brownstone is something special: pictures only.

Picture trivia is a seven round, hi-def  power point presentation displayed on the flat screen TV’s around the bar.

The rounds this week were:
1.  childhood photos
2.  before there was i-tunes (name the band/singer by album cover)
3.  Chicago athletes past and present
4.  flags of the world
5.  2001 movies (name the movie)
6.  mug shots
7.  party like a rock star, *#$& like a porn star (photos of rock or porn stars)

There is actually one more round of trivia than the provided answer sheet can support, which is a nice surprise at the end of the game.  Kind of like finding out you have some more pringles in the can when you could have sworn you’d finished.  Sweet (and salty).

The first round, name the celebrity by their childhood photo, was way challenging, as evidenced by our score, only 2 out of 10 correctly identified.  Didn’t feel too bad about most of them… I’m not sure if I know what Clive Owen looks like now, much less how he looked back in junior high school (hint: he looked like a member of the Strokes).  Probably should have known Uma Thurman.   Also, Denzel Washington looks exactly the same as he did as a kid, which is good, because 1 out of 10 is an awful score.

5 young Clive Owens

5 young Clive Owens

The next hardest round was the Chicago athletes, which should have been renamed with the word “Obscure” at the front.  No fooling around.  The round featured two Blackhawks and one member of the Chicago Fire.  We only recognized Brandon Lloyd from his U of I days.  Also, I think there was a picture of Jeff Samardzija from a Notre Dame frat party.  Good thing spelling doesn’t count.

Nice specials for the night.  $5 glasses of wine,  $4 Stella, and allegedly $5 salads.  The salad special wasn’t very well advertised.  If we knew about it, we probably would have had one.  Also, we tried to order a 16 oz PBR, but they had run out, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Some fun incentives included a perfect score any round = skillet cookie and
best team name = shots (winner: Goat to hell… so-so in my opinion).  It would seem that skillet cookies would be flowing like water, but the rounds are hard enough that getting 10/10 is pretty difficult.  Our closest call was with the 2001 movies round (9/10).  I swear that that girl in Rush Hour 2 really does look like the one in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.  Sorry, team.  (Editor’s note: she looks like that girl because she is that girl.)

All in all, it was a fun time and refreshing twist to a night of trivia.  The host was efficient, personable, and kind of know-it-allish (as a good trivia host should be) and the specials were good.  I should also note that “mug shots” is a very popular trivia photo round… this may have been our 3rd or 4th encounter with celebrity mug shots and it’s always rewarding to be able to recycle some trivia knowledge.

I’d go back… but first, does anyone have a Chicago Blackhawks program I can borrow?
